How losing a job prompted—and inspired—Kevin McCann to start McCann Window and Exteriors more than 30 years ago.
I didn’t plan on joining the window industry, but sometimes life has other ideas. As a young adult, I dabbled in everything—from working at a lumber yard to installing concrete and landscape design. But while I had jobs, I lacked a clear career path. Then, when my parents decided to move to Wisconsin, I knew I didn’t want to go with them. It was time to get serious about my future.
At the time, my best friend was selling windows for a large national company, and he encouraged me to give it a shot. I quickly discovered that I loved working with people, and I was pretty good at it.
Fast forward a decade: I was working for another window company, halfway through a master’s degree in social work, and my wife and I had just welcomed our second child. We were living in a condo, eager to buy a house. Then, out of nowhere, I was let go. My sales manager was planning to start his window company and invited me to join him. But before I could decide, our boss found out—and just like that, I was unemployed.
I remember calling my mentor in a panic: “I’ve got two kids and no job—what am I going to do?” I'll never forget that he responded calmly: “Your unconscious mind is giving you exactly what you want. Now hit the ground running and start your own business.”
So, I did. It was 3 PM on a Friday, and I thought, “I’ll take the weekend to plan and start Monday.” But my mentor wasn’t having it. “Why put all that pressure on yourself? Make the calls today,” he said. I took his advice, lined up meetings with suppliers, and by Monday, I had credit lines with two window companies.
So I did. It was 3 p.m. on Friday, and I said I’d give it the weekend and get started on Monday. Again, my mentor pushed me. “Why would you put all that stress on yourself for the whole weekend?” he said. “Make the calls today that you need to get going.” I took his advice, set up the meetings I needed, and by Monday, I had lines of credit with two windows suppliers.
Up until that point, I thought I’d end up in social work. I believed that would be the way I’d make a positive difference. But starting McCann Window & Exteriors showed me I could run a business and help people. The key? Honesty, integrity, and doing right by every client.
