What is the difference between single-hung and double-hung windows?

In a single-hung window, only the bottom sash moves. In a double-hung, both the top and bottom sashes move and tilt in for cleaning. Double-hungs are easier to clean and ventilate, which matters in a two-story Chicagoland home where reaching the outside of an upper window is a real hassle.
