Energy-efficient Windows
Apr 02, 2024
Energy-efficient windows in Chicagoland have to work in two seasons that do not agree with each other. January wants a low U-factor and a sash that actually locks. July wants glass that does not turn a west living room into a greenhouse. This page is the primer: labels, comfort, and the install. The 2026 buyer guide on this site goes deeper on current products. The tax-credit article covers paperwork. Keep the three pages separate so they do not clone each other.
McCann Window & Exteriors, Inc. has been installing in this climate for 35 years. About 50% of the work is repeat or referral. Crews stay 10 to 15 years. That is the context for how we read a sticker on a unit.
Read the NFRC label, not the adjective
U-factor is winter heat flow. Lower is better on a heating-dominated house. SHGC is solar gain. Visible transmittance is how gray the world looks. Air leakage is the whistle at the lock. Energy Star for this climate zone is a useful screen. “High efficiency” on a banner is not. If a salesperson cannot show the label that matches the unit on your proposal, you do not have a spec.
Argon between panes and a warm-edge spacer are normal on the units we install. They are not a kitchen-table upgrade. Triple-pane has a place on a loud street or a west wall that cooks. It is not a requirement on every ranch.
Comfort is the first result you can feel
A chair you can sit in next to the glass in January is the point. Utility bills may ease. We will not print a fake percent off a ComEd or Nicor statement. Houses leak in attics and rim joists too. Windows are part of the envelope, not the whole envelope. If someone guarantees a dollar amount, ask them to put it in the contract and watch the subject change.
Summer is half the story
Low-E coatings that knock down west sun keep the air conditioner from fighting the glass. Shades help. Trees help. A north bedroom should not automatically get the same coating as a bare west wall. Too much solar control on an already dark room makes a cave. We would rather spec two glass packages on one house than sell you one coating for every hole in the wall.
Frames and how they operate
Vinyl, fiberglass, and wood-clad can all be efficient when the unit is built and installed correctly. Casements seal hard. Double-hungs are the default on a lot of Chicagoland housing and can be tight. Sliders need honest interlocks. The efficient choice is the one you will actually close and lock, flashed into a dry opening.
As a Pella Platinum Elite Certified Contractor, an Andersen Premier Certified Contractor with Marvin also available, we can show you real examples of each on the consultation, side by side, so the comparison is honest instead of one-sided.
Installation is an energy feature
Backer rod, low-expansion foam where it belongs, flashing that drains, and sashes that meet the weatherstrip. We still find “efficient” windows sitting on wet sills. New glass in that pocket is a delayed callback. Insert versus full-frame is an energy decision because it decides whether the last leak path stays in the wall.
We don’t play pricing games. Straightforward pricing names the series and the glass. We show up. We clean up. We deliver what we promise.
Credits are a side quest in 2026
Do not buy windows because of a federal 25C speech. Rules change. Comfort and a dry opening remain the reasons. We supply invoices and labels. We do not file your return.
What we write on the quote
Series name. U-factor. SHGC. Insert or full-frame. Color. That is an energy conversation you can take to the table. “Efficient package” is not. If two rooms disagree, the quote can carry two glass packages. That is normal. It is not an upsell trick.

This page vs the 2026 guide
The 2026 Chicagoland guide on this site goes deeper on credits. The rebate article is paperwork. This page is the product: NFRC labels, glass, frames, install. Dark vinyl in full south sun is a heat conversation. Materials are not a morality play. Vinyl, fiberglass, and wood-clad can all be efficient when labeled and installed. A maple on the west side is part of the spec whether we sell it or not. So is an attic hatch. We stay in our lane and make openings honest. 847-562-1212.
Keep weeps open. Do not paint weatherstrip. Replace shredded screens so you will actually operate the sash in May. Tight houses show indoor moisture more honestly — that is often a fan-and-humidifier conversation, not a defective coating. Energy-efficient windows are labeled glass in a dry, square, air-sealed opening. Everything else is catalog. 847-562-1212.
Energy Star for this climate zone is a screen, not a personality test for the brand. Ask for the label that matches the unit on the proposal. 847-562-1212.
Bring condensation photos and the rooms you avoid. We will spec glass that belongs in this climate. 847-562-1212.
